Taking Care of Yourself is the Key to Happiness

One of the cornerstones of good health is developing the ability to understand, know, and care for yourself.  This may seem like a very basic, if not patronizing suggestion, but it actually holds value when examined under a microscope.  All too often, there are people who become so distracted by life’s many demands: the kids, the job, the friends; the car, the house, the bills.  While all of these things are certainly important in order to keep life going, it’s easy to get lost in the mix and forget to take care of our greatest asset: the self.

There are certainly mixed feelings and opinions about the value of pampering the self.  People may ask: Is it really that important to laze about all day, sitting in the spa, getting massages, and feeling spoiled?  “I’m not getting anything done,” they might think.  In actuality, you are getting plenty done. 

It is generally accepted that stress has particular effects on the body.  It can lead to high blood pressure, negative thought processes and a constant state of high physiological tension.  Sometimes referred to as chronic stress, these effects can put unnecessary pressures on interpersonal relationships. 

When you pamper yourself, you may trigger a relaxation response which returns the body back to a resting state.  This leads to clearer thinking, happier thoughts, and a sense of control.  If your body can return to this state on a regular basis, it will be easier to make decisions with an uncluttered mind.
